Equilibria Fluid Optimisation Program

FLUID THERAPY MUST BE CAREFULLY MANAGED

While fluid therapy plays an essential role in managing hospitalised patients and can be lifesaving when used correctly, it is often used inconsistently, not prioritised or prescribed incorrectly.1-5 When fluid therapy is mismanaged, the result can be serious complications.4

RISKS OF FLUID MISMANAGEMENT

Too little fluid increases the risk of4:

- Hypovolemia

- Tachycardia

- Hypotension

- Renal failure

- Shock

- Multiple organ failure

Too much fluid increases the risk of4:

- Fluid overload

- Peripheral edema

- Hypertension

- Respiratory failure

- Poor wound healing

- Delayed bowel recovery

SUPPORT FOR FLUID DECISION-MAKING WITH THE EQUILIBRIA PROGRAM

Baxter's comprehensive Equilibria Fluid Optimisation Program assists clinicians in making decisions about administering the right fluids to the right patient at the right time. It offers advice and expertise, as well as comprehensive fluid management tools, to help clinicians and hospitals adopt best practices in fluid management, using Baxter’s parenteral intravenous (IV) solutions.

FLUID CHOICES FOR DIFFERENT STAGES OF TREATMENT

Different stages of fluid therapy may require different types of fluids.1,6,7 Baxter’s broad range of fluids can be used to meet the specific needs of patients requiring fluid therapy.

  • In rescue (lifesaving) and optimisation (organ rescue) phases, balanced/buffered isotonic fluids may be the appropriate choice.8
  • In the stabilisation (organ support) phase, a buffered low-sodium solution containing glucose may meet fluid needs.2
  • In the de-escalation (organ recovery) phase, IV fluid can be reduced as appropriate.2

INSTITUTING THE EQUILIBRIA PROGRAM TO UNLOCK IMPROVED OUTCOMES

In addition to its portfolio of IV fluids, Baxter offers clinicians and hospitals numerous resources to help them establish and maintain an effective approach to fluid optimisation that is aimed at unlocking improved clinical and economic outcomes.

  • Tools, advice and templates for assessing fluid use and the current standard of practice
  • Evidence and strategic planning assistance to build the case for change when appropriate and to establish a program implementation timeline
  • Protocols for establishing trackable measures that can be used to assess progress
  • Educational materials to increase awareness and knowledge about fluid management and balanced/buffered fluids – why they are used and how to use them effectively
